The Yale LGBTQ Center is proud to welcome it’s second full-time staff member Matthew Farley (he/him) who joins the team as the Assistant Director of Operations.
Matthew joins us North Carolina with a robust background in educational administration, leadership, human resources, non-profit management, and mentorship. He has served as a Student Services Coordinator, Dean of Students, and Interim Principal for a charter school he helped establish in Charlotte, NC. His primary responsibilities were to provide student support and programming for LGBTQ and BIPOC youth and their families and assist the leadership in the administrative management of the school.
In addition, he has been an active faith leader in the Black church while attending seminary pursuing a Master of Divinity at the oldest Historic Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the southeast, Shaw University. He most recently pastored a congregation in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Matthew is passionate about social justice issues and often cites his own experiences as a FGLI, Black, queer man of faith from the South as helping him build his own resilience and determination to overcome adversity and foster communal joy for the communities he serves.
Matthew is a natural fit for the Yale LGBTQ Center in that he radiantly exudes radical hospitality and joy, two values we have worked to include in our center’s very mission. He looks forward to meeting and connecting with students, faculty, staff, and alumni throughout the academic year and welcoming you to the many events we will be coordinating. In addition to serving as the chief of staff under our director, Matthew will manage the day-to-day operations of the Yale LGBTQ Center facility, including our reception desk, space reservations, and administrative processes. Matthew will also supervise the Student Assistant team, coordinate with campus and community partners, and advise the Pride@Yale and QTPOC standing committees. In addition to supervising and mentoring Yale College students, he aims to foster a culture of care by emphasizing a mantra of “Choose Joy”!
Matthew enjoys going for walks and exploring New England, working out at the gym, attending sporting and art events, and spending time with Winston, his 2-year-old Yorkie.
